30 Hour Famine 2018

30 Hour Famine 2018 was Feb 23 & 24. The Youth went 30 hours without food to raise money and awareness about childhood hunger. We spent time Friday night learning about the plight of refugee children, prepared signs and a menu for our Saturday service project for Our Place Waldorf Soup Kitchen, participated in a refugee simulation that ended with the kids building cardboard box shelters. Saturday we opened the day with worship and more learning abut refugee children and the lasting impact that poor nutrition can have on health. Then we raised $ for Our Place Waldorf at both Giant I Waldorf & La Plata, took a quick break to swim & get refreshed, shopped for food to make a special Saturday dinner for Our Place, prepared, served & cleaned up from the meal, closed with worship and broke our fast with communion and the left overs from the meal we had prepared earlier. It was an awesome time - now praying that God will bless those who will receive the resources raised by our group and all the other 30 Hour Famine groups!

30 Hour Famine News

Our GSUMC 30 our Famine Team was able to raise $2119.91 through the generosity of sponsors and proceeds from the Pancake Supper! This money will feed and provide education and care for 53 children for a month! In addition to fasting & learning how poverty impacts lives, our team cleaned up the GSUMC property, removing over a ton of leaves, to help with upkeep so our building can continue to be used for ministry in our communi-ty. We also served at Charlie's Place in DC, sorting and organizing their clothing closet and personal toiletries supplies and hearing the testimony of a man who fell into homelessness and is working to get back on his feet. Thanks to those who fasted and served that weekend: Sarah Sbordone, Alyssa & Deanna Gerhart, Hermela Dimissie, Daphne & Jerome Spencer, Kyha Howard, Jaquan Scott, Christian Carr, Liam Perella, Heather Van-Brunt, Cori, Zane & Doug Casto, Carol Wunderlich, Marc & Camden Perella, Phil Day & Becca Warner. And thanks to all the many people - too many to list here - who served on the Pancake Supper Crew!)
